VALENTINE’S DAY TASTE TESTING ACTIVITY

Valentine’s Day is not typically one of my favorite holidays to celebrate in the classroom but this activity is one that I enjoy doing with my students. I began this taste testing activity with my students in the fall with apples and it was a hit so we brought it back for Valentine’s Day.

This fun activity will engage students in activating their five senses while providing practice with generating descriptive words and practice with counting using tally marks. Not to mention they get to have fun tasting some really great candy and chocolate.

WHAT YOU NEED

HOW TO IMPLEMENT IN YOUR CLASSROOM

Students will begin by examining the first candy, Swedish fish. Students will come up with descriptive words to describe what they see, feel, smell and hear. Then students can taste the candy and come up with a word to describe what they taste. After tasting, students can vote on whether or not they like the candy by coloring in the thumbs up or thumbs down.

After all votes have been casted, students will then tally up the number of thumbs up votes for the candy and then repeat the process for the Hersheys Kiss and Sweethearts. This activity is great for partner or small group work or as a whole group activity. When I implemented this activity in my classroom in the fall with apples, we completed it as a whole group activity. This helped my PreK students learn how to spell and write the descriptive words they came up with to describe the apples. Then we worked on it as a small group activity again for Valentine’s Day.
