CLASSROOM JOBS DISPLAY 2.0

Classroom jobs, or classroom chores, are an integral part of the classroom community. While teachers are typically the ones who manage the classroom, students play a part in shaping the classroom environment. Classroom jobs are a win-win for teachers and students. Classrooms have many moving parts. There are so many tasks that happen in just a single day. Having students help with these tasks can be really beneficial. Assigning classroom jobs to students teaches responsibility, makes them feel part of a team, and gives them a purpose. It also keeps the classroom running smoothly, teaches students responsibility and teamwork, and helps to alleviate some of the teacher’s responsibilities.

I like to incorporate classroom jobs into our routines at the beginning of the school year, but you can introduce them into your classroom at any point of the school year. Understanding your students and when to incorporate this process into your classroom is the key to its success. It is also important to have a plan in place on when you would do decide to incorporate classroom jobs into your daily classroom routines.

I created my classroom jobs display as a way to make classroom jobs more exciting and to help students feel more empowered about taking ownership over various roles in our classroom. The display was created in a way that makes it simple for students to understand all of the jobs available in the classroom and how those jobs are to be executed throughout the day and week. This classroom jobs display includes 36 premade classroom jobs labels, 36 premade classroom job descriptions, editable classroom job descriptions so you can create your own, and premade classroom jobs letters for display header.

SETTING UP YOUR CLASSROOM JOBS DISPLAY

Begin by printing and laminating each part of the classroom jobs display. You will need to print and laminate the classroom job labels, the matching classroom jobs descriptions, and the classroom jobs letters for the header. After laminating each part, cut out the letters for the display and place them on the wall of your choice in your classroom. I love pairing this product with full page library pocket folders and clothespins. You will need one library pocket folder for each classroom job. After laminating the classroom job labels, cut them out and tape each one to the front of the library pocket folder. Then place the matching description into the library pocket folder. Once you have all of the parts together you can hang them on the wall under your classroom jobs sign.

The clothespins will be used for each student. Begin by writing each students name on a clothespin. Once you have one created for each student, you can clip the clothespin to the corresponding classroom job that the student will have for the week. Students will be able to find their name and review their assigned job. This will help them to feel confident in completing that job for the week. At the end of each week, I change over the clothespins to assign students a new job for the following week. To ensure that all students have a chance to complete each job, I simply rotate the pins in a systematic order. I like to move each clothes pin to the right and move the student assigned to the final job back up to the first job.

Rotating jobs at the end of the day each Friday will ensure that our class is ready for the next week. At the beginning of each school year, we practice going over classroom jobs. Students practice finding their names, identifying the classroom job they have for the week, and reviewing the description for their role. At first some students may forget the role they have for the week, but having the display ready and available helps students to take ownership over understanding their role in the classroom.

If you are teaching in a PreK classroom like I am or if you are working with students that may not be able to read the descriptions yet, You can edit the description to include pictures of what the job will entail. For example, using a picture bookshelf for the librarian job will help students to remember that they are responsible for organizing the books in the classroom for the week.

We also like to practice when each job should be completed with the students. Some jobs happen at the beginning of the day, some happen at the end of the day, and some happen throughout the school day. At the beginning of the school year, we will also review when each job should be completed throughout the day.

Jobs like the classroom DJ or the lights manager happen throughout the day. They may happen once a day or several times a day. Jobs like the plant monitor and breakfast helper happen at the beginning of the day in our classroom, so students with this job for the week should be ready to begin their tasks at designated times in the morning. This is helpful to practice with your students so they can become familiar when and where jobs are taking place.

We integrate checking our classroom jobs for the week into our morning routine. Checking our classroom jobs is one of the first tasks we complete in the morning, behind putting our belongings away, washing our hands, and completing daily attendance. Students practice checking their jobs daily, even though their jobs only change once a week. This ensures they have the routine down at the beginning of the year. Throughout the school year, students can begin checking jobs once a week.
